PVC is polymerized from vinyl chloride monomer and is one of the commonly used thermoplastics. Its trade name is referred to as "Chloroplastic".
Pure polyvinyl chloride resin is a hard thermoplastic material, its decomposition temperature is very close to the plasticization temperature, and its mechanical strength is poor. Therefore, it is impossible to use polyvinyl chloride resin to make products, and plasticizers, stabilizers, fillers, etc. must be added to improve performance to make PVC plastics, which are then processed into various products.
Polyvinyl chloride is divided into rigid polyvinyl chloride and soft polyvinyl chloride according to the amount of plasticizer added.
b. Rigid PVC is made with only a small amount of plasticizer. It is characterized by hard texture, high mechanical strength and good chemical corrosion resistance.
c. PVC plastic has poor heat resistance, and its strength is greatly affected by temperature. The strength at -20°C is 80% lower than that at 20°C. Therefore, film products are not easy to be stored and used at low temperature; the use temperature of soft products does not exceed 45 °C, and the temperature of hard products does not exceed 60 °C, which will age and become brittle when exposed to light for a long time.
d. During the processing of PVC film, in order to prevent thermal decomposition, it is necessary to add a heat stabilizer. Since the heat stabilizer contains lead salts, etc., the PVC plastic is toxic, so it cannot be used as food packaging.
e. Polyvinyl chloride plastics contact with organic solvents and naphthalene and other insect repellents, which will cause stickiness and melting, and easily absorb odors; due to the strong volatility of plasticizers, it is not suitable to store for too long.
Hard products are hard and smooth, and the sound is dull when struck; soft products are soft and elastic.
Polyvinyl chloride cannot be packaged for food.
Soft PVC can be made into a good agricultural film, and is often used to make raincoats, tablecloths, curtains, ticket clips, handbags, etc. It is also widely used in the manufacture of plastic shoes and artificial leather. The outermost layer of the power cable is usually made of PVC.
